Benefits of Pets

The term "man's best friend" originates from the deep bond between dogs and humans, highlighting the unwavering companionship and loyalty that dogs provide. Pets, particularly dogs, can uplift our spirits on challenging days and serve as a source of comfort during stressful times. Many pets, including dogs, can become lifelong companions, significantly reducing anxiety and stress levels. This is largely due to the release of oxytocin, a hormone associated with bonding, when we show affection to our pets. Additionally, pets can help fill the void in our homes. Research has demonstrated that dogs positively impact our heart rate and blood pressure, offering great news for dog owners seeking relaxation (Baun et al. 1984; Allen et al. 2002; Virués-Ortega and Buela-Casal 2006).

While not all pets are easy to care for, the benefits of pet ownership are numerous. All pets require attention and a responsible owner to meet their needs, including food, space, veterinary check-ups, walks, and grooming. This responsibility can make pet ownership challenging, particularly for individuals with disabilities.

Studies have shown that dog owners tend to walk more than those without dogs. For instance, older adults with dogs average a daily walking distance of about 1,500 meters (approximately 0.95 miles), depending on their living situation (Scheibeck, 2011). Furthermore, research published in the National Library of Medicine indicates that individuals with dementia can also benefit from having a dog (Larsen and Lingaas 1997; Perkins et al. 2008; Tribet et al. 2008).

If you have a caregiver or family member to assist you, the challenges of pet ownership may be less daunting. However, losing a pet can be a profound loss, especially after forming a strong bond.
